Jan 01, 2009 I've been having trouble with iTunes not quitting, and not being able to be forced quit. It starts to, but immediately re-opens. I have to press on/off button for ten seconds to shut down computer, because iTunes won't allow restart or shut down. Start into macOS Recovery by holding down Cmd-R when booting before the chime until the apple logo. Open Disk Utility - found in the upper utility menu option. Check the left source list for the name of your disk. For Macs running Catalina it is the Disk that does not end in '- Data'.

I found a solution which worked for me. I have had the same problem for quite some time now (although in my case it was from an earlier version of itunes onwards), with iTunes refusing to shut down and even more annoyingly canceling system restarts and shut downs when I tried to carry them out. Having searched on here for a while and not finding anything I tried out some random stuff myself to eliminate the issue. It appears that my fault was due to the SRS iWow iTunes plugin that I had installed some time back. As soon as I uninstalled SRS iWOW plugin the problem was gone and has stayed away for several days now. I used the uninstall app that installs itself with the program initially to fully remove it. (you might want to download and install the application from the developers web page again if you have deleted yours)
Not sure if this is the cause of your problem, but I thought I would share my answer just in case it was. Failing this it may be some other third party plugin (although any others I have installed have not caused me problems). Try removing them one by one. Hope this helps Jono Comments are closed.
